Eye on the Community

Our vigilant members have spotted areas of urgent needs in the community not met by other Assistance League programs.  We address those needs through our newest program, Eye on the Community. Working with Horizonte Instruction and Training School and the Homeless Youth Resource Center, Assistance League supports and enables young people to move forward and become capable, productive members in the community.

The Homeless Youth Resource Center provides a safe, trusting environment and basic needs for youth, ages 15-22, to help them begin the process of moving from homelessness toward self-sufficiency.  Assistance League provides sleeping bags, small tents and first-aid supplies to those living on the street.  Smith's gift cards help with food and necessities; bus passes and tokens help these young people get to work and visit their families. Assistance League Thrift Shop provides appropriate clothing for employment along with Payless Shoe and Great Clips Hair gift cards.

Students at Granite School District's alternative high school, Horizonte Instruction and Training School, receive incentives such as backpacks, water bottles and Smith's gift cards for improved academic and attendance progress. Graduating seniors in the Bridge program - students who have displayed consistent, punctual attendance; academic excellence; and college level writing and critical thinking skills - are given laptop computers to help them work toward their goal of earning a college degree.  Most of these students are first-generation high school graduates who have overcome great adversity to succeed.  Assistance League is pleased to help them build positive futures.
