They Were Wishy – We Were Washy
People experiencing homelessness can get meals, connect with community services, shower and wash their clothing at the daytime Weigand Homeless Resource Center. Learning the center’s washer and dryer were in terrible condition – we got busy. At Lowe’s sales specialist, Tyler Slade, guided us to heavy-duty commercial grade appliances that would perform reliably with the center’s constant use. Lowe’s store manager, Brian Park, after hearing our story offered such a generous discount, we were able to provide two washers and two dryers! Mr. Slade knew about Assistance League and its programs because his father is a regular customer and big fan of Assistance League of Reno.
We also supplied new socks, boxers, 50 sweatshirts and 120 new towels. Clients using the Center’s showers are given two towels to use, then return.
Relief and Dignity
The INN Between gives medical respite to individuals experiencing homelessness so they can access hospice or medical care management. It provides an end-of-life home for the terminally ill or temporary placement for medically frail people. Patients have safe housing, basic needs and care and are not left to suffer or die on the streets. Assistance League provided ten “New Patient Necessities” baskets filled with hygiene products, towels, lip balm, and personal items and a mobile sphygmomanometer for blood pressure monitoring.
Collaboration and cooperation are fundamental to Assistance League’s mission. Public schools, care centers, Head Start, Rape Recovery, Horizonte Instruction and Training Center are among organizations with which we align and collaborate to reach kids and adults with genuine needs. In addition to our ongoing programs, we at times furnish much needed supplies to qualifying groups.
