7/7/08 – Assistance League of Salt Lake City Receives Community Service Award

On June 7, 2008, Margo Simmons, President of the Salt Lake City Chapter of Assistance League accepted the Community Service Award for an organization that is making a difference in our community. On behalf of the staff and students of Horizonte Instruction and Training Center, Salt Lake City School District, Principal Jim Andersen presented the award during the Center’s commencement ceremony.

Emphasizing ALSLC’s many outreach programs, Operation School Bell, Brighter Tomorrows, Operation Healthy Teeth, Book Bank, Kids on the Block, Act III, Baby Bundles, Mr. Andersen, speaking at the commencement, said that the organization is to be commended. Further, he stated, “Professional attire, scholarships to take the GED and incentives such as backpacks for our students, touched the lives of many at Horizonte. This type of recognition for our students truly makes a difference.” Students and staff were excited that ALSLC provided opportunities for individuals who on their own do not have the means to access GED programs.

Finally, Andersen told the graduates and audience that it was “amazing” that the members of the ALSLC worked as “volunteers”.
