11/10/08 – Assisteen receives special honor at Kennedy Center
One of our new Assisteens®, Genevieve Lane, was recently honored by the VSA, an international, non-profit organization dedicated to creating a society where all people with disabilities learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts. Last year Gen, who has been writing since Kindergarten, submitted a poem, “Like She Always Did,” to VSA arts’ online literary journal. Her poem was one of three poems chosen to be performed at VSA arts’ Playwright Discovery Evening, which was held at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on September 25, 2008.
Gen’s poem was presented in sign language as well as oral reading. After the performance of her work, Gen was spotlighted in the audience and she received many compliments at the reception afterward.
